Racing from her car she scampers up the stairs. Stops just short of the door to recompose her self, fixing her purse that is now in shambles, pulling out her compact and making a few minor adjustments to her perfectly manicured hair.
As she walks into the room, it feels as though she is a cold soda on a hot summer afternoon, feeling the sweat starting to build at her hair line. Not being deterred she heads straight to the counter and hears a welcoming voice. “Welcome to your local chamber after hours, whats your name”...........
This story reminds me of my first chamber event. I was so nervous I was like a turtle who didn't want to come out from the comfort of his shell. But I am so glad that I did. I decided to write on this topic today because I feel there are two important items to be learned from it.
To grow your business people need to know you exist.
Every chamber event I have been to; and I have been to countless chambers and chamber events there is one thing missing at EVERY chamber, that you can take advantage of.
To Grow your Business People Need to Know you Exist: One of the single most effective marketing tactics to growing your business is meeting as many people as possible. The more people that know your business the more the odds wil be in your favor of being that referral any time someone brings up the need of a hairdresser or barber.
So here are a couple tips on how to work a chamber or networking event to get the best results:
First go into the event looking to be the missing cog in the wheel. One of my favorite barbers has a saying “I am the.... 'I know a guy' guy”. Being in the profession you are in you meet all walks of life; so use that to your advantage. Meet people but not with the idea of trying to sell them on your service but listen to what they do and see if you can make a connection with one of your clients. This does a number of things that work towards your advantage.
1st you no longer have to worry about having that one min elevator speech that we all dread so much; as the pressure of selling is out the window. 2nd even if you just introduce the idea of possibly making a connection for someone you meet; any time they hear the words hairdresser/barber; you will be the 1st person that comes to mind. Heck they may even ditch their current hairdresser or barber just because you put their interests first. This is all based on simple psychology; the rule of reciprocation. When someone does something for us we want to do something in return and a lot of times the return is greater than the initial offering.
The 1st rule is simple go to these events to be the missing cog and make people want to reciprocate and watch your business grow.
What every chamber is missing: HAIRDRESSERS & BARBERS. The rooms are filled to the brim with bankers, real estate agents and insurance sales men; but in all the meetings I have been to I have only met one hairdresser. And guess what...... she kills it! She has built a book of business in one year that for most would take 5 years. If you do the math how many people does one person typically know? Therefore every person you meet you are actually growing your network ten fold; especially if you put them first.
The thing to take away is go to these meetings be the rock star that you are and if you can put people first you will start to see your business grow to heights that you never could have imagined.
