In today’s market place there are hundreds if not thousands of competitors for every business. Especially for Hair dressers, stylists and barbers. Heck, in just my little neighborhood, Old Town Arvada, there are at least 8 salons that I have seen in a 10 block radius.
The question then becomes, are you marketing so that people find you, or have you positioned yourself so that people seek you out?
The question is really rhetorical, because if you don’t do any marketing then how will people know you exist. But does your marketing simply inform people you exist or does it make them seek you out. I know I state this a lot but we see over three thousand marketing messages a day! This is a whole heck of a lot. We as humans are great at adapting, and we are adapting to allow these messages to go in one ear and out the other. It is imperative that your marketing messages get people to SEEK you out rather than just allowing them to know you exist.
You might ask, “Clint, this is a great concept but how do I put it into practice?” The answer is really simple. Focus on your values! Spend some time to really think about why you are in the beauty industry. Not for a pay check or to win the hair dresser of the year award; these are just outcomes of your why. Really dig deep and ask yourself WHY?
To help you get a better understanding I will give you my WHY. I had this burning desire to START LIVING FOR MONDAY. (This has become my tag line) I was so tired of feeling un-human at work and dreading Monday mornings. I came to this understanding that we only live once; so why am I only living for only 28% of my life; when I should be living for the full 100%. This became my why, my passion for helping others to achieve their dreams and start living for Monday. The paychecks and the notoriety are all outcomes of working for my WHY.
Why your WHY will make people SEEK you out. When your marketing materials speak of your purpose, your values, your why you start to attract clientele that shares these same values. The best part is that when these people see or hear your values in your marketing messages you now connect with them on a deeper level and you raise yourself from under the marketing mud. These people will now seek you out, they will be the champions of your message and they will be your customers for life.
